Ampicillin Principen®, Omnipen® Generics available Pregnancy: B; Lactation: Consider Alt
Caps: 250 mg, 500 mg |
Children: 50-100 mg/kg/day (max 2-3 g/day) in divided doses Q6H. Adults: 250-500 mg PO Q6H.
Food: Administer on an empty stomach 1-2 hours before food. Important side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, seizures, rash, bleeding abnormalities, decreased WBC count, drug fever, superinfection.
Caution: May cause nonallergic maculopapular rash (5-10% of children), especially in patients with viral infection, infectious mononucleosis, or acute lymphocytic leukemia.
Reduce dose in renal disease: CrCl 10-30 mL/min administer every 8-12 hours. CrCl <10 mL/min administer every 12 hours.
Ampicillin has comparable coverage to amoxicillin; however, amoxicillin has improved oral absorption and requires less frequent dosing.
